Job Interview Questions and Answers

Congratulations! You have applied for a job and now you are getting ready for that important job interview. Your English is excellent and you are looking forward to making a good impression on your future (hopefully) employer. Now, you need to make sure that you also have the right type of English for that job interview.

Your job interview in English will have specific questions and you should have the appropriate answers. It will also require a lot of flexibility in your usage of tenses. I´m about to give you a few tips on job interview questions, with some sample answers in English.

When you walk in the room the very first impression you make on the interviewer can have a great influence on the rest of the interview. It is important that you introduce yourself properly by shaking hands and being friendly. The first question is often a friendly type of question. Don't be surprised if the interviewer asks you something like:

How are you today?

Are you nervous? Don’t be, I won´t bite you.

Did you have any trouble finding us?

What´s the weather like outside? =

The interviewer wants to help you relax. Answer the question without going into too much detail. The language you use should be simple but polite, for example;

Good answers to the first question;

I'm fine thank you, and you?

I'm well thank you, but a little nervous.

Bad answers

So, so

OK

Not so well, I didn´t sleep last night.

Talking about your experience and credentials (qualifications) is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education from university or your last job on and any special training you may have done in the past. Your experience is any work that you have done that is directly or indirectly related to the job you are applying for.

Education

Remember that your education took place in the past. Therefore you need to use the past tenses, for example:

I attended the University of Alicante from 1987 to 1993.

I graduated with a degree in Electrolysis. Etc.

If you are currently a student you should use the following present tenses:

I am currently studying at the University of …, and will graduate with a degree in…

Go on to explain that you are improving your English skills by any courses you may be taking, or by saying that you study a certain number of hours a week to improve your skills.

Adding that you belong to an English speaking group is great.

The tenses you should use are the following:

When talking about current employment, take care to use the present perfect or present perfect continuous. This signals that you are still performing these tasks at your current job.

Always include any training you have had when speaking about your education. This includes any computer training, correspondence courses, especially experience or training where a number of other people were involved. Make sure to mention your English studies. What exams you have taken. What teachers´ you´ve learned from, and what practical speaking experience you´ve had, like, visits to Ireland, England the United States. This is very important as English is not your first language and the employer may be concerned about this fact. Assure the employer that you are constantly doing constructive things.

I´ve been working for ….years as a sales agent and doing very well.

Or, I have been creating client contracts for over nine months.

When talking about past employers use the past tenses to signal that you are no longer working for that company, for example:

I was employed by Toni’s Gadgets from 1989 to 1992 as an assistant director.

I worked as a receptionist at the Hesperia hotel while I was living in El Campello.

There are many more useful examples of questions further on in the book.

Do as much listening comprehension as possible. Emerge yourself among English speaking people. Teachers are best, if you can afford them. Some teachers will organize group games, or reading classes, at low fees for small groups of students who want to have conversation classes solely for the purpose of perfecting their pronunciation. However, it is advisable to procure classes from a native teacher who is fully qualified in interview preparation.

Most importantly, you will need to demonstrate your qualifications and skills, which are required for the job you are applying for. The job skills that you have acquired in the past may not have been for the same position. Therefore, it is very important to show how the capabilities that you have now, suit the job you that are being interviewed for.
